SERIAL CA4I003 - Custom Koa baritone guitar commissioned Sept. '04.
A repeat customer wanted a baritone guitar with a body made of an exotic wood, have a natural look, and be light. He also had other instruments with satin necks, and liked the way they felt. He asked for a birdseye on birdseye neck dyed light amber with satin nitro on the back. After some discussion, we decided on a body shape loosely based on the old Fender Musiclander® loaded with Seymour Duncan Cool Rails pickups. Other than that, he gave me a lot of latitude on the overall configuration.

I've always liked Koa, so I decided to laminate a 1" Koa overlay on mahogany, as the two woods have similar densities and color saturation. Koa grows only on the Hawaiian islands. Althought it grows fast and is not considered an endangered species, it is not easy to find. The body back is known as "Genuine Mahogany" and is harvested in South America. This mahogany is beautiful, and has a tighter grain than African or South American Santos mahoganies.-
